Pupfish have fascinating evolutionary histories of extreme adaptations and morphological divergence across the Americas. From isolated ponds in the middle of the Mojave Desert, to the highest Andean plains, pupfishes as a group have adapted to the harshest environments on the continent.

Our lab uses multi-omics, modern embryology, gene editing, and microscopy, in combination with field work expeditions and museum sciences to answer questions in craniofacial and sensory evolution.

Our lab centers around three fundamental questions:

1. How do genomic changes alter developmental programs to produce extreme craniofacial and sensory diversity among fishes?

2. Do sensory trade-offs sculpt craniofacial morphology during development, impacting ecological adaptation ?

3. Can naturally-evolved genetic and neuronal circuits be engineered to redirect morphology and behavior?
